A hotel and supper club owner, Dan Montgomery was the son of Jonas and Charity Vincent Montgomery. He was a black businessman, who operated two restaurants beginning in 1907 at 158 Exchange Street and 342 Curtiss Street. "Dan Montgomery's" became a successful hotel and supper club for more than eighty years. It was where many nationally acclaimed black artists performed. Montgomery's place also was an important meeting site for black intellectuals.

The Buffalo Evening News article on October 9, 1978, noted that Dan Montgomery's was for years the best place to go for the best in nightlife in Buffalo and had been a showcase since 1911. The restaurant closed in 1978.

He was once married to Anne Montgomery, who established another famous Buffalo hotel and supper club, The Little Harlem.
