Hall was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1908. His parents, Omri and Willie May Hall, moved the family to Buffalo in 1919. By 1925, Hall was well known as a boxer. He won the welterweight championship of the Philippines, Australia, China, Japan and the Fiji Islands in 1925 until 1928. He lived in Australia during that period. He married while in Australia and had a daughter, who apparently continued to live there after Hall's return to the States.
